If you follow us on Instagram (@divine_mv), you know we are all about the threads. And so are the hundreds of patients we’ve treated with them. But…what really ARE threads? How can they help you win the anti-aging game? Do they really LIFT your face? Read on to see my answers to some questions sent in about threads.

IMG_4361Q: What exactly are threads and how do they work?
A: The threads we use are essentially a dissolvable suture made of a substance called polydioxanone (since no one can pronounce it everyone just calls it PDO!). PDO is an inert substance that your body gradually breaks down over time. This substance has been used in surgery for decades and has an excellent safety profile. The threads are pre-loaded in a cannula, allowing me to place them in the skin. The tensile strength of the threads, along with their laser-cut barbs, make them strong enough to lift and reposition tissue.

Q: I’ve been thinking about getting a facelift. Could I do threads instead?
A: Threads could absolutely be a great option for you. It is amazing what a 30-minute in-office procedure can achieve (especially with little to no downtime). Some people may still be a better surgical candidate, but in my practice most patients prefer to avoid surgery.

Q: I have been getting filler in my face for years, but should I switch to threads?
A: We’ve all seen it…the infamous “pillow face” resulting from too much (or inappropriately-placed) filler. This can also happen over time after getting fillers, since the skin cannot hold the extra volume the same way it did when it was younger (skin loses elasticity as it ages). Overfilling leads to an unnatural look and can further damage your skin’s elasticity. This is not an issue with threads, since we are using your face’s natural volume to lift. In many cases after threads we avoid having to use filler altogether. I have found that patient satisfaction, effect and longevity of threads tends to be greater than for filler.

Q: Can I have threads in areas other than my face?
A: Absolutely! While it is much more common to have threads placed in your face, we can also do them in other areas for a lifting or tightening effect. Areas such the neck, abdomen, arms, knees and buttocks are other areas we treat.

Q: I am only 34 but really want threads. Is it too soon?
A: Everyone is different. My youngest thread patient was 28 and my oldest was 79 years-old. My patients span a wide age-range and are from all walks of life. It is important to have a consultation so I can appropriately assess your needs and goals, as there may be a different type of treatment better suited for you. However, in general starting earlier is better than starting later; it is much easier to prevent than it is to correct.

Q: I have seen a lot of botched thread jobs. How do I choose a doctor for this? (I do not live on Martha’s Vineyard otherwise I would come to you!)
A: It is true; there are a lot of providers out there that do not have adequate training or experience. In these cases, it is absolutely possible to get unwanted results. As a national trainer and Key Opinion Leader (KOL) with Rejuvn8 PDO, you are in good hands at Divine. (You would be in good company if you made the trip, as we frequently have patients that come from afar!)

Q: Be real. How painful is it?
A: It is not the most fun thing in the world, but I promise it is not as bad as it looks or sounds! We do numb the areas we are treating, though you will still feel a tugging and pinching sensation at times. We also use cooling machines, vibrating tools and nitrous oxide (ProNox) to help ease your discomfort and anxiety. Rest assured that you will be happy and not regret it!
