No One Can Put a Price on a Good Night’s Sleep

By Chaiel Schaffel

Well, almost no one. The one exception is Bethany Scanlon, owner and operator of Ocean Breeze Bedding currently located at the beautiful, new showroom on State Road in Vineyard Haven. The local business was established in 2011 at its former Post Office Square location in Edgartown.

Guests, Washashores and Natives alike can recognize the feeling of walking into a home; comfortable, inviting, and relaxing. In a word, wonderful! From the initial warm greeting to a knowledgeable and helpful staff to the seamless transaction, Scanlon has a way of making you feel right at home.

After staring at our cellphone screens for hours on end, or trying to shut down the barrage of thoughts that wash in from the day, getting a good night’s rest can seem out of reach. Bethany’s tactic is to beat the tossing-and-turning by providing your body with the quality material it needs to fall directly into a deep sleep.

Ocean Breeze offers luxury bedding by Carol & Frank, Elisabeth York, C & F Enterprises and Designers Guild, furniture by Braxton and Culler and Maine Woodwork, among a wide variety of other high-end products that are perfectly suited to any bedding need. The store also stocks mattresses by Serta, Simmons and Beautyrest including Beautyrest Black. She calls Beautyrest, one of the many companies she deals with, “the best that you can get,” said in an interview with Dressed MV. “I strive to carry the very best product at all price points, so that even if you’re getting something less expensive, you know that you’re getting the best product at that price,” Scanlon continued.

Before starting her own business, she worked at a different mattress company for a decade, with prior experience in the shipping game. To her, the equation to good sleep is simple: Good materials equal better sleep.

“When you get into higher levels of mattresses, you’re looking at better support systems, higher quality materials, and with that comes a more comfortable feel. It’s important to fit someone with the appropriate sleep surface for their sleep position, their body shape, their needs,” said Scanlon. “There’s a lot that goes into it. It makes a strong impact on someone’s everyday waking life,” she
continued.

Family is key when it comes to providing a good consumer experience, as one of Scanlon’s sons works with her in the showroom along with a family friend. Being from a native island family that goes back at least three generations, Scanlon has put down deep roots in the form of Ocean Breeze Bedding, where she contributes to the native market of the island by offering a necessary and highly valued commodity; that of a good night’s sleep. Her devotion to the Vineyard is shown in her connections to family and friends, and her support of Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey. Scanlon served as a member of the Board when her sons were players in the league.
