We see dozens of patients a day in my practice, and despite what you may think, my top priority is not selling procedures. My number one priority is getting patients to understand the value of an at-home skin care regimen. One of the most frustrating things as a clinician in this industry is to have patients willing to invest in a variety of treatments (keep in mind, many of which are not inexpensive), but are apprehensive or even unwilling to invest in quality skincare products.

WHAT CONSTITUTES QUALITY SKINCARE?
If you’re thinking Sephora or Ulta, you’ve guessed wrong! The best choice is medical-grade skincare, also known as cosmeceuticals, which have undergone extensive research and controlled testing for safety and efficacy. Medical-grade products contain a much higher concentration of active ingredients, meaning you do not need to use as much. Think of it like this: medicalgrade options might have a higher price tag, but they’ll be a much better bargain in the long run.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN STARTING A NEW SKIN CARE REGIMEN?
Be sure the products are appropriate for your type of skin. In other words, some ingredients are not recommended for certain skin conditions; and likewise, some ingredients are better suited for specific skin concerns. Some of these include retinol, glycolic acid, kojic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate… wait, what?! I wouldn’ t expect you to know many of these. And, even i f you’ve heard of
them, you probably won’t know the proper application or indication. That is okay! This is where a trained and experienced medical aesthetic provider can come to your rescue.

DO YOU REALLY SEE A DIFFERENCE USING SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
Absolutely! While the best changes are seen over time, it is not to say you won’t notice the benefits even after the very first use. For example, Divine’s Resurfacing Cream ($60) decongests and smooths the skin immediately after the first application; and the softness of your skin the morning after using Divine’s O2 Lift Mask ($36) is incredible. That being said, consistency is the key with skin care. With my patients, I use the analogy of exercising. Don’t expect to see much of a difference if you go to the gym once a week; frequency and consistency are just as important as quality.

So, the next time you come in for a treatment, remember that I am not trying to sell you a cream – I am helping you protect your investment!
